Cygnus built by Harland and Wolff in 1935 as a Butty boat (no engine)
She worked originally for Grand Union Canal Carrying Co. then later for British Waterways and Willow Wren.
She has has just come out of full time carrying service on a commercial coal round and is now to be sold. The boat would make a wonderful heritage craft with a little finishing or would be well suited as a business boat or to work commercially.
Cygnus has benefited from a 10mm steel base plate fitted in 2010 and over plating 5 inches up the outside of the footings. She is fitted with wooden gunwales in fair condition and has a full set of top planks and side clothes.
At present the boat has steel doorway sections in place of the beams and chains to allow an under cloth - walk through conversion without the boat spreading. These will be included with the sale but could easily be removed and replaced with conventional beams and chains.
The cabin is of steel construction and fitted out in the traditional back cabin layout, with the addition of a small extension to house a galley arrangement with sink, drainer, hob and space for fridge.
At present the back cabin stove will want replacement.
All in all Cygnus will require some work to have her restored to her former glory but offers a very good starting point.
Cygnus has just been dry docked and fully blacked and the pictures of this can be seen. She has had a full survey with the summary outlined below:
4. Summary
Based on the evidence gathered during the survey inspection, I would conclude that:
1) In order to maintain the integrity of this vessel the submerged structure of this vessel required no immediate remedial work apart from that considered routine maintenance for this type of craft.
2) Close visual inspection and hammer sound testing of the exterior of the base-plate, where accessible and the submerged side-plating below the waterline did not indicate significant wastage or thinning.
3) Ultrasonic thickness measurement of the steel base-plate indicated very minimal plate diminution with a satisfactory residual hull thickness remaining.
4) Within the scope of the survey, the welded repairs and overplating to the submerged structure were found sound with no cracks or distortion noted.
5) The side-plating above the waterline, decks and aft cabin superstructure were found to be in a sound condition, with no significant damage or distortion noted. A recommendation made within this report that the vessel should be equipped with a reliable bilge pump. The hull internal construction found in a functional condition with maintenance advice given within this report.
